It happened one day…
I met him on the way…
The wind was clam …
We met each other in the farm…

He saw me…
I saw him…
We exchanged smiles…
We were friends!

We met daily…
Our time passed gaily…
We chatted a lot…
About just here ‘n’ there…

I knew as days passed, he care..
That feeling which came to me was very rare…
We had a lot of things to share..

One day he said..
He had to leave…

I was sad…
Somewhat, really mad…
But nothing I could do…
He had to move..

The day came he had to leave…

Contentious issues in civilised societies can be sorted out only through one of the three avenues, namely, by
1.observing an existing law,
2. through discussion
3.or through the judicial process.

The principle of decision by majority is fundamental to the operation and survival of society as known to us. From panchayat to parliamentary level, and from transnational corporations to the United Nations, issues are resolved largely through a majority process. If this is scuttled, the end point will be subjugation of the majority to minority diktat and rule by the riff raff.

DMAIC your life

Now what does this mean ? Well, DMAIC is a term that is commonly used in Six Sigma. It is a 5 step solution to every problem that you can ever come across. DMAIC stands for Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve and Control.

In a real life scenario, you encounter several problems. If only we have the time and energy to analyse it to the fullest extent possible, we would have lived a far more objective and comfortable life.

Take a step back - this is reality where you don’t even have time to think, forget about time for an in-depth analysis. So, inorder to expedite things and do a quick turnaround on your problems, adopt the time tested method of defining, measuring, analyzing your problems and subsequently improving and controlling it.

And don’t worry about its authenticity and practicality - some of the best companies in the world deploy Six Sigma, Prominent among them being Motorola, GE, Bank of America etc.

Although, I am not a big fan of Six Sigma as I strongly believe nothing is better than human intuition to solve problems but then my choice shouldn’t be the basis for your selection. Tools like this should be used to aid the process of problem solving. Just take care that the tools don’t become the problem itself.

Again, I am not preaching Six Sigma here, lets be clear. All I am saying is that DMAIC is an excellent and quick problem solving methodology that can give you result in no time, thereby saving you quite a lot of time

Brood over it for some time and start practising what is best for you…

his probably sounds sinister, but a country’s national interests are protected by hard-nosed realism and not by soft options. A State is respected by others only if it is able to protect its interests and project its power. If India is seen to be soft and weak by our neighbours, we will lose respect even here. The covert option is something many States have and they use it, too. The Americans are quite free and easy in announcing that they have set aside funds to destabilise an unfriendly regime. The same rules do not apply to us but the principles of trade craft are usable.

Covert action can be of various kinds. One is the paramilitary option, which is what the Pakistanis have been using against us. It is meant to hurt, destabilise or retaliate. The second is the psychological war option, which is a very potent and unseen force. It is an all weather option and constitutes essentially changing perceptions of friends and foes alike. The media is a favourite instrument, provided it is not left to the bureaucrats because then we will end up with some clumsy and implausible propaganda effort. More than the electronic and print media, it is now the internet and YouTube that can be the next-generation weapons of psychological war. Terrorists use these liberally and so should those required to counter terrorism.

The third weapon in the covert option is the use of cyber techniques. This is an ability to intercept cyber networks and communications, cripple systems and carry out counter attacks on the enemy’s systems. In a country that boasts its brain power, it should not be difficult to find such expertise.

Despite the latest drama on our borders, future wars are unlikely to engage massive armies locked in prolonged battle for real estate. Attacks could be of the Mumbai kind or come by stealth, master-minded by some computer whiz kid and the targets are our ways of life. Unless the State learns to be flexible and agile, and unless there is full international cooperation, it will always be an uphill struggle with the peak never really visible. The covert option is more than just blowing bridges and killing innocents. At all times, it should form part of a State’s armoury. It takes years to build this capability and just a few weeks to destroy this.
